A U.S. Navy Virginia-class nuclear submarine was discovered by anti-submarine aircraft and a Pacific Fleet submarine during planned exercises in the Kuriles, TASS reports, citing a source close to the naval sphere.
"An American Virginia-type boat was discovered by Il-38 aircraft of the naval aviation and one of the Pacific Fleet boats during exercises to search for and destroy mock enemy submarines in their possible deployment areas," he said.
According to the source, after getting in touch with the intruder, the submarine used a simulator to split the target on the means of radar and acoustic control and left the territorial waters of Russia at maximum speed. It is possible that new details of the incident with the boat will soon appear.
Earlier, the Pentagon denied the information that the Virginia-class US Navy submarine was in Russian territorial waters. The department said that American submarines move exclusively in international waters and do not enter Russian territory.
